Podracing Returns: 'Star Wars: Galactic Racer' Officially Revealed with 2025 Release Date

By

BREAKING — Lucasfilm and developer Quicksilver Games today announced Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a new high-speed racing title that revives classic podracing alongside speeder bike competition. The game is scheduled for a 2025 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

The reveal came during a livestream event, showcasing a teaser trailer that blends iconic podracer engines with sleek speeder bikes. "Now this is podracing... and speeder racing... and speeder bike racing," said Marcus Kell, creative director at Quicksilver Games, echoing the famous line while confirming the game's three racing modes.

Release Date & Platforms

Star Wars: Galactic Racer will launch in fall 2025 across all major platforms. Pre-orders open in early 2025, with a special collector's edition that includes a scale model of Anakin Skywalker's podracer. A Nintendo Switch version will feature gyroscopic controls for tilt steering.

Trailers & Gameplay Reveal

The first official trailer, clocking in at 90 seconds, shows vehicles tearing through canyons on Tatooine and forests of Endor. A second, longer trailer — featuring split-screen multiplayer — is slated for release at The Game Awards in December 2025.

"We wanted to capture the raw speed and danger that made podracing iconic, while adding modern track designs and intuitive controls," said lead game designer Elena Vasquez in an interview. "Fans will feel the wind on their faces and the roar of engines."

Gameplay: Pods, Speeders, and Bikes

Players can choose from three vehicle classes: Podracers (twin-engine craft), Speeder Bikes (agile two-wheelers), and Speeder Racers (hover vehicles). Each class has unique handling and upgrade paths.

Tracks span iconic Star Wars planets: Mos Espa Grand Arena, the Jedi Temple's streets on Coruscant, and the wreckage of a Star Destroyer on Jakku. Galactic Racer also includes a career mode with character progression and online multiplayer for up to 12 racers.

Background: The Return of Podracing

The last major podracing video game was Star Wars: Episode I Racer (1999), which became a cult classic. For years, fans petitioned for a modern revival. Lucasfilm's decision to license a new racing title comes amid renewed interest in Star Wars racing games, partly spurred by the success of Star Wars: Squadrons (2020).

Quicksilver Games, known for the Torque Burnout series, was selected for its expertise in arcade racing. The studio spent two years prototyping engine sounds and track physics. "We consulted with Lucasfilm's archives to ensure every engine hum matches the original movies," Vasquez added.

What This Means

Galactic Racer marks a strategic pivot for Star Wars gaming, which has focused heavily on narrative shooters and open-world RPGs in recent years. By reviving podracing, Lucasfilm taps into nostalgia while targeting a broader audience that enjoys competitive racing games. The inclusion of speeder bikes also aligns with the lore seen in Return of the Jedi and The Book of Boba Fett.

For fans, this could be the first step toward a full-fledged Star Wars racing franchise. If successful, analysts predict future expansions adding Canto Bight's Fathier races or even Resistance ski-speeders. The game's success could also influence the upcoming Star Wars Celebration events.

Key Features at a Glance

A full gameplay demo will be playable at E3 2025 and Gamescom 2025. Pre-ordering grants exclusive in-game skins based on characters like Sebulba and Aurra Sing.
