According to industry analyst Jack Gold of J.Gold Associates, vendors and service providers created the FDE position specifically to help clients install AI successfully. Many non-tech companies have attempted internal AI deployments but often fail due to poor vision, lack of talent, insufficient budgets, or underestimating deployment complexity. FDEs bring the missing expertise, having done similar work for others before, dramatically increasing the probability of successful implementations.

Who Is Hiring Forward-Deployed Engineers?

The demand is surging. As of early 2025, Google Cloud alone has 1,513 open positions for forward-deployed engineers under its go-to-market AI team. OpenAI, which recently launched a dedicated Deployment Company, has 31 openings. Microsoft partnered with Accenture in March to establish a forward-deployment partnership. The trend is global—LinkedIn reports that FDE roles have grown 42-fold between 2023 and 2025, making it the fastest-growing AI-related job. For comparison, AI engineer positions grew only 13-fold in the same period.
